As a Hen Gathers Her Chicks

December 30, 2012 //  by Shannon Kelly

Second Sunday in Lent
Scripture: Luke 13:31-35

Lights! Camera! Action! The drama is about to begin. The powers that be collaborate to extinguish the ministry of Jesus. Jesus, keenly aware that time is running out, continues his work. In this poignantly feminine image, Jesus muses that he had longed to gather these children as a hen gathers her chicks. The hollowness of power confronts the powerfulness of the gentle.

Facing Temptations

December 30, 2012 //  by Shannon Kelly

First Sunday in Lent, Year C
Scripture: Luke 4:1-13

Jesus, energized and equipped, goes to the wilderness where he faced-down three confrontations that challenge us to this day. The first: how do we make the distinction between what we “want” and what we “need;” “bread” really feeds us? Second: who do we serve and what do we worship? Third: where are we smug, sure we are right, and putting God to the test? Jesus found his way through; Lent invites us to find our way through too.

Temptation

December 30, 2012 //  by Shannon Kelly

Lent, Intergenerational Lesson, Year C
Scripture: Luke 4:1-13

Today, many people are becoming ambivalent to, if not put off by, blaming the Devil for tempting Jesus. Temptation happens. What is important about this passage is that Jesus stared down each temptation and chose a better way. Perhaps the questions for us are: where or when am I inclined to be a show off? Where do I need to be in charge of things? Where am I so sure I am absolutely right and others are absolutely wrong? Then, as we consider our community, what can we do to be more in sync with what Jesus came to teach us?

A Cloud Descending

December 30, 2012 //  by Shannon Kelly

Last Sunday after the Epiphany, Year C
Scripture: Luke 9:28-36 (optional 37-43a)

The Season of Epiphany that began with a hint of the Trinity closes with yet another glimpse. Jesus takes three of his disciples with him to the mountain to pray. They hear a voice again! This time it is not a dove descending, but a cloud. And even Jesus’ clothes become dazzling white. What must have been going on in the minds of the three disciples, as they kept silent about all that they had seen?

Come Fish for People

December 30, 2012 //  by Shannon Kelly

Fifth Sunday After the Epiphany, Year C
Scripture: Luke 5:1-11

This week, Jesus has a boat as a pulpit. Amid the crowd are two exhausted fishermen who had worked all night long without catching anything. Casting nets, pulling in empty nets, all night long. Jesus uses these two men as his “sermon illustration.” Jesus tells them to let down their nets for a catch. They muster up the courage to try yet again. They take the risk and find abundance.

Prophets in Their Hometown

December 30, 2012 //  by Shannon Kelly

Fourth Sunday After the Epiphany, Year C
Scripture: Luke 4:21-30

Prophets don’t do very well in their own hometown. It seems to be easier to hear hard sayings or even fresh insights from someone who comes from almost anywhere else. Perhaps it is because we remember when the prophet was a teen-ager, or because we helped raise this young person. Jesus is not spared this reality.

The Spirit of the Lord Is Upon Me

December 20, 2012 //  by Shannon Kelly

Third Sunday After the Epiphany, Year C
Scripture: Luke 4:14-21

Jesus, energized by the retreat he has just completed and filled with the Holy Spirit, comes to the synagogue in his own hometown on the Sabbath. Taking the scroll of the Prophet Isaiah, he reads: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me.” When he finishes reading the passage, he rolls up the scroll and sits down. What did those in attendance hear? What do we hear?

Welcome to the Wedding Banquet

December 20, 2012 //  by Shannon Kelly

Second Sunday After the Epiphany, Year C
Scripture: John 2:1-11

Jesus begins his ministry not behind a pulpit, but at a party: a wedding banquet, the most extravagant celebration a village could contain. “They feast upon the abundance of your house; you give them drink from the river of your delight.” (Psalm 36:8) And the best wine is saved for the last.

I Have Called You By Name

December 20, 2012 //  by Shannon Kelly

First Sunday After the Epiphany, Year C
Scripture: Luke 3:15-17, 21-22

“I have called you by name, you are mine.” (Isaiah 43:1) Jesus had probably heard these words before seeking baptism from John the Baptist. As Jesus comes up out of the water, we have a hint of the working of the Trinity – a true ministry of collaboration. Jesus prays, the Holy Spirit descends as a dove, and the Voice calls him by name.

Happy Epiphany!

December 20, 2012 //  by Shannon Kelly

Feast of the Epiphany, Intergenerational Lesson, Year C
Scripture
: Matthew 2: 1-12

Happy Epiphany!

Today we explore the passage telling of the visit of the wise ones to the Christ Child and understand that this amazing baby was coming to the Hebrew people AND to all people. Christmas carols and cards have embossed the bare bones story Matthew provides. So we most likely envision three kings riding camels and dressed in elegant robes with fancy crowns. The wise ones probably represent three different cultures or races. Whoever they were, they were wily enough to avoid getting trapped in the web of a threatened king, brought their intriguing gifts to the child, and went home — by a different way.
