Cross to Carry

June 17, 2013 //  by Shannon Kelly

Ordinary Time, Proper 18, Year C
Scripture: Luke 14:25-33

What is the cross we are called to carry as a disciple of Jesus? What are we being called to take on? Jesus invites us to carefully consider the cost before choosing to carry this cross. We might begin by considering how our possessions get in the way.

True Hospitality

June 17, 2013 //  by Shannon Kelly

Ordinary Time, Proper 17, Year C
Scripture: Luke 14:1, 7-14

What is true hospitality? Is it inviting to dinner all those you are in with, and who will then be obligated to invite you to dinner? What if true hospitality were inviting those who would really be blessed, those in no position to return the favor? And what might the well-to-do people at the dinner table with Jesus have thought of this radical etiquette?

You Are Free

June 3, 2013 //  by Shannon Kelly

Ordinary Time, Proper 16, Year C
Scripture: Luke 13:10-17

For 18 years the woman had been unable to stand upright, lift a child, or gaze at the stars. Bent over, she saw only what was on the ground. “You are free,” she heard Jesus say. Jesus touched her and suddenly she could raise her arms high in the air, look at the world, and praise God. All the uptight leaders could do was grumble because Jesus had done this healing on the Sabbath.

Risking the Choice to Change

June 3, 2013 //  by Shannon Kelly

Ordinary Time, Proper 15, Year C
Scripture: Luke 12:49-56

Not everyone chooses he fire of change. God does not drag us kicking and screaming into the kingdom. God appears to be amazingly patient. The sting of divisions pains us; we yearn for peace. How are we to interpret the present time? What will we choose?

Where Your Treasure Is

May 30, 2013 //  by Shannon Kelly

Ordinary Time, Proper 14, Year C
Scripture: Luke 12:32-40

What if the abundance of possessions — all this stuff we are accumulating — is, in fact possessing us? Find a stash of treasure, and our hearts will not be far away. What if truly getting the readiness Jesus calls us to is about streamlining for action? What IS this kingdom that is God’s “good pleasure to give?”

Becoming Rich Toward God

May 28, 2013 //  by Shannon Kelly

Ordinary Time, Proper 13, Year C
Scripture: Luke 12:13-21

Of course, we have needs, and so do our families. Suddenly it dawns on us. The name of our frantic acquisition is greed. Has greed begun owning us? How much is enough? How might we move to becoming more rich toward God?

Lord, Teach Us To Pray

May 28, 2013 //  by Shannon Kelly

Ordinary Time, Proper 12, Year C
Scripture: Luke 11:1-13

The Lord’s Prayer.  We have said it so many times the words may have lost some of their power. What if we chose to really search and knock, expecting the door to open? What is the Holy Spirit longing for us to request?

Choosing the Better Part

May 26, 2013 //  by Shannon Kelly

Ordinary Time, Proper 11, Year C
Scripture: Luke 10:38-42

Even on a sultry summer day, the wind of the Spirit hovers — almost imperceptibly. Our lives rarely accommodate a slower pace for the summer. Yet, we are invited to notice, again, the priorities that drive us. We are invited to stop, however briefly, the manic activity and consider options Jesus offers us.

Of course, the dishes must be washed and the bills paid, but will we take a deep breath and just ‘BE’? The static of distractions drowns out the music of the cosmos. Don’t just DO something; sit here, Jesus invites.

Go and Do Likewise

May 24, 2013 //  by Shannon Kelly

Ordinary Time, Proper 10, Year C

Scripture: Luke 10:25-37

Often our task as we explore the Word, is to listen to a story we have heard before — maybe even many times before — and listen to it as if for the first time. Today, with a fresh look at the story of the Good Samaritan, we ask: Who are the marginalized people in our community? Who is the one who shows mercy in our community? Where have we felt the wind blowing us to “Go and do likewise?”

Sent in Pairs

May 23, 2013 //  by Shannon Kelly

Ordinary Time, Proper 9, Year C
Scripture: Luke 10:1-11, 16-20

Trial run. The disciples have received their basic training, and now it is time to do a test case. Two by two Jesus sends them where he intends to follow — no lone rangers here. Some will receive the pairs, and some will not. Sent out as raw recruits, the disciples return seasoned disciples. They discover they can do the work Jesus has given them to do. Will we choose to do the work Jesus has given us to do?
